What is MWD?

MWD is the measurement taken while drilling a well, or borehole from the vertical and magnetic directions of the North. It is known as Measurement When Drilling. It has various tools that enable it to perform its functions effectively. This machine is modern and structured or molded in hi-tech state. The tools used while drilling include

* E-field long wire system- This is a tool that facilitates access to information in down holes formations. These formations are normally affected by electromagnetic signals in large quantities. It has a characteristic of a long wire as the name indicates that makes it access deep holes.
* Mud pulse- a mud pulse is a programmable system that allows data transmission in varying drilling conditions and depths. It has a capability of supporting varying flow rates and it is well suited for different types of lost circulation materials with its varying sizes.
* E-field magnetic tool- this tool helps achieve a balance in harsh grilling conditions because it has no moving parts. This characteristic makes it very stable and strong. It also has a two-way direction of communicating system enabling it to be faster that other tools in relaying data and information. The E-field magnetic tool has varying collar sizes meaning that it can be modified to fit into different down holes.
* Gyro MWD (gMWD) – This tool is the best when it comes to determining accuracy in cases where there are intense magnetic interferences. This tool is used until the well clears up the magnetic interferences.

Using Measurement when drilling helps the engineers and the drillers have access to data that they would not have normally when using the traditional or the normal drilling rigs. This information includes but not limited to;

*  Severity of vibrations in the down hole
*  Down hole temperature
*  Mud flow volume
*  Torque and weight of the bit being used
*  Rotational speed of the drill strings
*  Smoothness of the rotations
*  Dynamic pressures contained internally as well as static pressure available.

It is also possible to determine the rock types and composition found in the down hole by examining the gamma rays emissions.

These equipment can be used for any drilling job and they ensure positive productivity and results. Most companies hire or rent out these machines to oil, water and gas organizations that indulge in mining and drilling activities. They ensure that they provide good quality instruments that are well kept and maintained to ensure durability and productivity.
