What is a futon couch?

by | Oct 21, 2013 | Futons

A futon couch is an American variation of the traditional Japanese futon. In Japan, the futon is used for sleeping at night and then folded and stored during the day; this allows the room to be used for other purposes other than sleeping. Futons in Houston TX do very much the same thing except rather than store them away during the day; they convert into a couch for sitting. These futons are a mattress that sits on a wooden or metal frame than folds in the middle and changes instantly from a flat bed to a couch. The futons used in the US were developed in the US; the Japanese versions are not used for double duty.

The futon goes back centuries; they continue to be an integral part of any Japanese home and a part of Japanese culture as well. They are a traditional piece of furniture used for sleeping; they are designed to be used on the floor, on top of a tatami mat, mats that are kept exclusively for this purpose. The tatami mat is kept extremely clean, its only purpose is to be used under the futon, needless to say; the futon is also kept impeccable.

There are a number of differences between the traditional Japanese futon and the version built in and used in the US and other western countries. The most obvious is the frame; Japanese futons do not have this feature at all. The western futon frame is constructed in such a way that it folds in the middle; this means the mattress also must fold in the middle so that when it’s upright, it forms a comfortable couch. As it is being used as a couch, the mattresses in the US are much thicker than normal and they are filled with synthetic batting. As futons in Houston TX stay visible all the time, the mattresses can be had in a variety of fabrics and patterns to compliment the homes décor.

A futon couch is also larger than a traditional futon. The traditional futon is designed to be stored away during the day so smaller sizes are common. The futon couch on the other hand is designed to offer both a flat bed and a couch so they are larger when folded.
