For large applications and use in specific industries, particular types of weld studs are considered to provide the best and most secure types of fasteners. While this is important for any application from small equipment to large, when you are talking about fasteners for agricultural or construction equipment, bridges, buildings, ships, processing and manufacturing lines and in general fabrication, fasteners become even more critical.
Identification
The term projection weld studs refers to the design element of the weld stud. These types of weld studs will have one or more projections on the base or the element to weld to the base piece. The projections are typically domed in shape and have a limited rise off of the surface.
Different shapes of projection weld studs are possible, but most include a standard weld stud with three or more projections on the top of the head or the underside lip of the head. The location of the projections corresponds to the position weld location and the specific application.
Alternatives
There is also the possibility to have a right angle head on the stud, with the projections on the underside of the flat head. Spade weld studs are less common, but they are often used for smaller components and parts. There is also the possibility of using a ring weld projection stud where there is a thin diameter ring that projects from around the stud under the head.
The advantage to the ring projection weld studs is a solid band to weld, creating a more effective leak and contaminant seal that doesn’t require the welding skill that is necessary to create the same type of weld on other styles.
