Insulating Your Pipes from Freezing

The coldest days of winter can pose a unique risk to your home. While it may seem that your home is cozy, warm, and well-protected from the elements, in reality the cold can endanger the integrity and function of your pipes.

Rather than wake up to frozen pipes in the bathroom, kitchen, and utility room, you can take steps now to keep them warm and insulated during polar blasts. By purchasing cathodic protection for pipes, you can wrap and protect them from cold that can come in through the walls, floors, and other parts of your home.

If you have never before purchased and used cathodic protection, you may wonder what the materials are and how they are supposed to be used in your home. In fact, this type of protection comes in many forms. The type you buy will depend on the variety of pipes you have in your home as well as what vulnerabilities they have to the cold.

For example, if you know that your bathroom pipe under the sink has a small leak around the basin, you may need to caulk it up to prevent cold from entering the pipes through it. The caulk is made from durable ingredients that will bind themselves to the basin and wood in the cabinet of the sink. It will prevent water and moisture from getting inside where they can cause the pipes to freeze.

Further, if your pipes are made out of PVC, they can be susceptible to freezing because of how thin the material is. It needs to be insulated from the cold in order to keep the water inside of them warm. Rather than wrap cloths around the pipes, you can maintain their warmth by wrapping them in tape and foam that will keep out the cold.
