Generally, once glass has been broken it is not really practical to join the pieces back together again. Certain adhesives (cyanoacrylates for example) will bond two perfectly matching glass edges together; but the bond is not strong and is clearly visible. Maybe it works to repair a broken glass ornament so that you can still look at it but it’s not a lot of use for drinking glasses and would be unacceptable to most attempting to repair broken window glass. Generally speaking; broken glass is replaced not repaired.
Not All Glass Repairs Involve Broken Glass
Glass in general can become scratched, chipped or stained and discoloured during use – this can even happen to the glass windows in our homes. Restoring such damaged glass could be referred to as a glass repair service. Chemicals and abrasive polishes are the main materials used for glass maintenance. Another area of window repair involves the seals that hold the window panes in place and prevent drafts or rain coming through the join between the glass and the window frame. Additionally, moisture can enter the gap between the two panes of glass used on double glazed windows – sorting this out is more window than glass repair.
Windows Are More Than Just Glass
Working from the principle that you do not try to glue broken glass back together; why do we see so many advertisements for car and truck windscreen repairs – aren’t automobile windows made of glass? Of course they are and; again of course; repair shops do not try to piece all the broken pieces back together again. They replace the broken one and their skills lie in fitting the new one in place correctly.
It’s the same with the windows in our homes and business premises. If the glass is broken; the first step is to remove it and clear away all the pieces. A new plane of glass can be cut to required size and fitted into the window frame. Fixing it in place is the main part of the repair – professionals who perform this type of work are referred to as glaziers.
Window Repair
As implied above; window repairs are carried out on the parts of the window that are not made of glass – frames, hinges, seals, etc. Sometimes an old piece of glass can be extracted and used to glaze a new replacement window pane.
