Creating Sterile Working Environments: What is Clean Room Molding?

by | Sep 11, 2019 | Plastic Injection Molding Service

Some plastic molding companies can make objects created by injection in a common room, while others demand manufacture in a more secure space. When manufacturing objects for industries such as biotech or pharmaceuticals, a clean room for molding becomes vital to prevent contamination by dust or chemicals.

ISO Class Distinctions

The most frequently used clean rooms for injection molding have a classification of Class 7 or a Class 8. Nine different classes of room sterility exist, but 7 and 8 are the most commonly used. What shields the shop floor is the predominant difference between the two classes. With a Class 7, hard walls shield the shop floor; however, molding and equipment barriers created by lightweight tenting detail a Class 8. Also, for a Class 7 space to keep the grade, a third-party agent must evaluate ISO standards. This includes air circulation.

Four Standards for a Clean Room

As for key standards to maintain a clean room for molding, keep in mind four aspects:

  • Air Regulation: Ventilation keeps clean airflow to maintain a low level of particulate.
  • Work Dress: Class 7 work dress demands are more stringent than a Class 8. Class 7 may require coverage from head to shoes over the top of work clothes. Class 8 is less demanding.
  • Machinery Types: Using electric machinery is wise because it runs cleaner than their hydraulic counterparts.
  • Packaging Regulations: Choose packaging that produces the least amount of particulate. Plastic and coated cardboard is standard.

Applications for Commerce

Clean room molding provides opportunities for repeat business. Companies that extend the service contract beyond the initial set-up into long term relationships are partners for discovery.
