Father’s Day is the one day of the year a person can officially and openly acknowledge what a Dad is and does. In fact, statistics indicate this day is celebrated by a majority of Americans. It is a popular day for selling conventional and online Fathers Day cards. In fact, on this day they fly off the shelf and from the net. It is no surprise, therefore, that Father’s Day ranks fourth in card sales.
A Brief History
While a few scholars may argue that Father’s Day existed in some form in the past, it is generally accepted that it is a manufactured occasion. In fact, it would probably not have come into existence if it had not been for an already established (and just as artificial) day – Mother’s Day.
It all started when a Mrs. Sonora Smart-Dodd, wife of Bruce Dodd and daughter of the late William Jackson Smart, heard her preacher extolling the virtues of Mothers during a Mother’s Day sermon one Sunday in May 1909. Mrs. Smart-Dodd did not have a Mother. Her father had raised her and five other siblings in the 1800s, virtually unheard of during that century. She spoke to her pastor about setting aside a day to praise Fathers. He agreed.
Mrs. Smart-Dodd would have preferred to have eh day on her father’s birthday in early June, the churchman complied but only as to the same month. Interest in celebrating a Father’s Day was slow to grow but it did grow. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson finally made the day a national event. He proclaimed Father’s Day to be the 3rd Sunday of June. Yet, it was not really an official national day until 1972. On this day, President Richard Nixon put his signature to a presidential resolution. From then on, Father’s Day cards became a common way of expressing appreciation of all a Father had done.
Choosing a Card
With so much to choose from in conventional and online Fathers Day cards, it is easy to forget the purpose. The day is to celebrate Fathers. As a result, do take the time to select a suitable card. This is simple if you choose a card that:
- reflects how you feel
