Whether you are new to the world of brewing or you have been immersed for quite some time now, chances are that you’ve heard of the latest beer trend — brewing beer using different terpene flavors.
Terpenes are naturally occurring chemical compounds that you can find in plants, fruits, and herbs. They are essentially the reason why plants smell a certain way. Most recently, brewers have been adding terpenes into their beers to add potent aromas and flavors and as a way to make the brewing process much more efficient.
Why Use Terpenes in Beer?
As mentioned previously, terpene flavors can improve the taste and smell of beer. There are a variety of different terpenes that can be used, some of which include pine, rosemary, lilac, lavender, citrus, wood, and so much more. When you drink a beer with terpenes in it, you will catch a slight whiff of whatever type of terpene the beer has been brewed with.
Another thing worth noting is that different types of terpenes go better with specific types of beer. For instance, Cascade, Citra, Centennial, Mosaic and Ultra hops are usually associated with APAs and IPAs.
Adding in Terpenes
If you are interested in experimenting with different flavors in the beer that you brew, consider getting terpene extracts to mix in with your beer. The terpenes can be mixed in any time throughout the brewing process and come in a variety of different options for you to try out!
