Benefits of Graphite

In the steel and iron industries, graphite is an important material. Because of certain properties, graphite rods are ideal for use in various projects and purposes such as welding and in metal foundries. Here is some information about graphite and why it might be the best choice for use in projects in the steel and iron industry.

Properties of Graphite

Graphite is composed entirely of carbon. But the composition of the carbon atoms is what makes graphite unique. The atoms form layers that are stacked on top of each other with space with a small space between each layer. Covalent bonds hold the atoms within each sheet together and the sheets are held together by dispersion forces, which is a temporary attraction.

Graphite has an extremely high melting point, even higher than that of a diamond. In order to melt graphite, the covalent bonds within each sheet must be broken. Another property of graphite is that it is a conductor of electricity. In addition, it has a low thermal expansion meaning it stays relatively unchanged as the temperature varies.

Graphite in Welding

Welding is the process of joining metals together at very high temperatures. In fact, the metals are heated to their melting points and joined together by being melted together. Since graphite has such a high melting point, graphite rods are an ideal tool for assisting in this process.

Graphite in Foundries

A foundry is a factory that melts metal and then makes it into castings. The molten metals need to be stirred at various points in the process. Because of the ideal properties of graphite rods, they can be used to stir the molten metal. The high melting point of graphite prevents it from melting and mixing with the other metals.

Graphite is a unique material that has many different purposes. Perhaps its most important feature is the high melting point that allows graphite rods to be used when melting other metals.
