A little on Watford

by | Nov 27, 2013 | Construction and Maintenance

Despite not getting a mention in the Doomsday Book, Watford does seem too upset, because it did get a mention in the Anglo-Saxon charter of 1007 and it has become a thriving town in its own right. Watford is known as a sort of gateway to the north. It sits very close to the M25 and M1, the main motorway that goes up toward Leeds from London and because Watford sits right there, going passed it is like entering the ‘stargate’ to the north, so to speak.

When the Metropolitan Railway built its Watford branch in 1925 it only went as far as Cassiobury Park. The materials used in the construction of the railway were expensive, but the company wanted to extend the line right into the High street. In those days it wasn’t possible to buy concrete ready mixed in Watford, so supplies had to be shipped in in order to construct the new development and complete the Watford Central Tube Station. The town had excellent communication after this extension and industrial growth was stimulated heavily during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.

Watford sits near the Grand Union Canal, too, which in the past made it possible to ship goods up and down the country. During the days when the canals were the main routes for transporting everything around the country it made Watford one of the central trade routes.

The Local Government Act

In 1894 Watford was actually created—under the Act—as an urban district and by grant of the 1922 charter became a municipal borough.  After the 2011 census there were 90,000 inhabitants and is a major regional centre for the ‘home counties’ to the north. Many companies have their headquarters in Watford, including the Camelot Group, who operate the Lottery, Taylor Woodrow—the construction company—J.D. Wetherspoon, the pub company and other multinationals.

Because of its central location Watford has excellent transport links to just about everywhere. There is a link to Heathrow, London, and many other major cities, making Watford of the most accessible places in the country. It also benefits from having the tube station as well as three national rail stations leading to the west coast, the north and the east.
