If your business revolves around water vessels, you probably have some high-quality hydraulic trailers. Whether they are towable or self-propelled, you want to keep your equipment in good condition, to protect your investment and limit downtime. Here are some helpful tips for maintaining your trailers, to get the best service from them.
Check Connections
Hydraulic trailers have many connection components, and they must be in good condition. This is an important matter of safety. Here are things you should check before hooking up:
• Tongue – make sure everything has sufficient grease
• Coupler – does it fit right over the ball connection?
• Safety chains – inspect for signs of corrosion, wear, or damage, and make sure they are properly connected.
• Nuts and bolts – look at all screws and bolts to make sure they are not corroded, loose, or damaged.
Tires
Check tire pressure regularly. Look for signs of uneven wear or improper inflation (excess tread wear on edges means under inflation and wear in the middle means over inflation). Check for cracks in the side walls and tread damage too.
Hydraulic Systems
Check all cylinders, hoses, fittings, and couplings for leaks. Raise and lower the trailer to be sure everything works.
Wheel Bearings
Bearings need proper lubrication but can still wear out even with the best maintenance plans. Do you see grease on the hub? You should re-grease the bearing. If the wheel is making odd noises, it may be time for replacement.
Lights
Your lighting system is very important for road hydraulic trailers. Make sure all lights are working, and no bulbs are burned out. Look for loose connections or frayed wires. Inspect lenses for cracks. This is a good time to inspect your towing vehicle’s lights too. Do not forget to check the turn signals and brake lights. You may need help when you check these lights.
