In many applications, including on heavy equipment, machinery, and systems, the choice of the correct hydraulic cylinder will have a large impact on performance, efficiency and the life cycle of the cylinder and system. Poorly made or incorrectly sized hydraulic cylinders are more likely to fail, which can cause excessive downtime, loss of product and even the risk of damage or injury.

A single acting cylinder is an effective option in many applications. The term “single acting” refers to the fact they hydraulic fluids only work on one side of the piston, to push the rod up and out of the cylinder. The return of the rod into the cylinder can be accomplished by various options, but typically by the weight of the load or springs within the cylinder housing.

For extended lift or push abilities, a telescoping single acting cylinder may be the best option. These cylinders, with multiple sections of the rod, are able to extend the lifting or pushing ability substantially more than found with a traditional cylinder.
